Inger's birth is listed in the Skanderup Parish Register, FHL microfilm 0051639. Her parents, Peder Christensen and Leene Cathrine Dahl, lived at Gjelballe farm. Sponsors were Christen Hjort's wife Maren Johannesdatter Dahl from Ødis, Jens Lauridsen's daughter Mette from Gelballe, Benjamin Ørlef from Tinghusene Dollerup Mark, Inder Pedersdatter and Hans Mikkelsen's son Mikkel, both from Gelballe, all of peasantry. Dahl is a locality name meaning valley. Inger was listed as a servant in the household of Anders Pedersen, 46, Gaardmand (farmer), born Gaarslef Sogn, Veile Amt, his wife, Bodil Nielsdatter, 33, born Høien Sogn, Veile Amt, and their children, Mette Andersen, 5, and Peder, 2, both born Smidstrup. One other servant girl, Christine Therkildsen, 24, born Ødsted Sogn, Veile Amt, was also in the household. Anders was a witness to the first marriage of Inger's future husband Niels Steffensen to Sidsel Marie Sørrensdatter in 1836. Inger was listed at age 38 in the 1860 census taken 1 February in Smidstrup Parish, Holmans District, Vejle County, Denmark, FHL microfilm 0039586, page 91. At that time she lived with her husband and two daughters. Husband Niels Steffensen was 13 years older than Inger. Inger is listed as a farmer's widow in the 1870 census for Smidstrup Parish, FHL microfilm 263067, page 248, with her four daughters at age 48. She was evidently running the farm. Inger was living alone by the time the 1880 Smidstrup Parish census was taken. She was listed as a widow, age 57, Lutheran, and as a 'husmoder.' Daughters Johanne Amalie and Magdalene apparently were employed outside Smidstrup Parish by 1880. Inger's death record listed in 1882 in the Smidstrup Parish record books says she was the widow of Niels Kristoffersen, deceased, of Klatterup Mark, Gjelleballe. If this is true , she must have remarried between 1870 and 1880. However, I have been unable to find a record of either a marriage between Inger and Niels Kristoffersen or of a death of Niels Kristoffersen in the Smidstrup Parish records.
